Mother is to blame. Period. Shouldn't have guns in reach of unstable kid. There had to be warnings.

You are right PP. No is to blame for this tragedy. Not the mother. Not the father. Not the killer because he may have had mental issues. Not society for failing to address those issues. Not any entity (govt, gun manufacturers, lobbyists) that assist people in ownership of guns for which the SOLE purpose is to effectively kill people.
Thank goodness no one is at fault so no one has to take responsibility.

OP, you bring up a good point. Even if you are pro NRA and feel very strongly that you have a right to own guns, but you have a mentally ill person living with you, would you be responsible enough to give up the guns?

I've watched helplessly as someone close to me self-destructed from mental illness. In this case, the mental condition did not materialize until mid-life.
In our society, there is virtually nothing you can do to help a mentally ill adult who does not want to help himself or herself. The system is broken, and it's heartbreaking. And then you have horrible human beings like OP who blame everyone around the mentally ill person.
OP, you know nothing about this woman or her situation. Why don't you just get out of your house and do something productive today instead of wallowing in misery and judging others without a ounce of human compassion.

Sorry about your FIL, but this reminds me, when I was in High School, my grandmother was carjacked in her back yard. My grandad saved the day with her pistol - no one was hurt. Grandmother's response was to remove all firearms from the house. Why? The incident woke her to the fact he was too old and feeble to safely handle a gun. They were both very lucky.

Ten years ago my FIL died of a brain tumor. He was a life long gun owner. When it was clear he was not in his right mind, DH and I snuck out all of his guns while he was sleeping. Why? Because we felt responsible. We still own those guns, stored responsibly. If I ever felt that I, DH or our sons were mentally unstable they would be gone in a heartbeat.

OP, your judgment is uninformed. You don't know what his mother did that was appropriate or inappropriate. You just don't know.
Some families of disturbed individuals are negligent, others are on constant high alert, trying to contain damage, although they're limited in what they can do. In yet other instances, the families are dysfunctional. There might be one or two members who try to contain or prevent potential antisocial acts, but the other members work together to stymie constructive actions and enable the family member who's acting out. In many instances, there's very little that the responsible family members can legally do.

Correct. I mean, one of the weapons had to be purchased in the 90s, maybe the father bought it and registered it the mothers name. Maybe the son bought it and illegally registered it in the mothers name. Just because they were legally registered, doesn't mean they were legally obtained or purchased.

Way too early to pass judgement on the shooter's mother, but the M4 Bushmaster found at the scene is NOT a hunting rifle. It is a military grade assualt rifle, used by our infantry today, that is designed to kill people as efficiently as possible. It is a very big deal.
