Before we moved here, my kids went to a sleep away camp with lots of kids form NOVA and lots of kids from MD. The kids from MD were...not very nice. When we were transferred to DC, it was a no brainier for us. We are happy with our decision. Besides, we drive a mini-van!!

First of all, NOVA is just as blue as MD, much to my disappointment.

It's a state rich in American history, some of which we can be proud of, some not, but important to study nevertheless. How can you say it lacks charm?

I don't think the differences in the nicer areas are all that profound. I do like the fact that VA seems to have more of a middle class and that the divide between the haves and have-nots is not as pronounced as in MD. Just talking about the DC suburbs here, as I don't see how what goes on in Baltimore or Norfolk has much to do with the local scene.

We have lived in the DC area three (soon to be four) times. We decided to give MD a shot after living in both DC and VA. We realized two weeks after we moved that we had made a huge mistake. Thankfully, we were renting. We lasted six months, broke our lease, and got the hell out of MD. We ended up buying in VA.

We've lived all over the US and in several places overseas. I have always been able to find something to like everywhere we've lived, until Montgomery County, MD. I would not live there again if you bought me a home and paid me to live there. We hated everything about it. The people were rude. The traffic was bad. Drivers are the worst I have ever seen. I didn't feel safe even in our supposedly safe area. The schools were over-rated. Everything about it sucked.

This is it. NOVA is just aesthetically unappealing to me. It's like they never heard of land use laws there.

DH works in PG county MD but parts of nova would have been ok commute-wise.

We searched for about a year in MD and a year in NOVA. The nightmare traffic in NOVA compared with the ugly homes for the money made us reconsider and start looking at PG County. After doing a LOT of research, we decided that PG was for us.

MD has better schools (#1 4 years in a row) and is the wealthiest state. We don't have to worry about bridges falling down, which according the VA State Senate President, is a concern b/c of the inability to raise taxes for infrastructure. MD doesn't have that problem.

Northern VA might be doing well, but the rest of the state is seriously in trouble.

We chose MD because we think it's a nicer area. I personally find most parts of NoVa to be ugly and lacking in charm. We also wanted to send our kids to private school. There are more options in MD and MD is much closer to the NW DC privates.
