I had one at 18 years old. It was the most painful thing in my life (don't want to scare you just being honest) and I've had ovarian cysts ruptures and kidney stones. Extremely painful for two weeks, fully recovered in about a month. I vomited from the anesthesia and pain meds and also developed thrush. It was worth it as I don't get stones anymore and don't get strep as often.

I'm in my early 40s and was just told by an ENT that I can have a tonsillectomy for recurrent, chronic, painful tonsil stones. Is it worth it? Whenever I have a tonsil stone, I really wish for a tonsillectomy because they can be so uncomfortable and gross.

Ouch, 17:35, that sounds awful. I'm sorry you've had/are having such a rough recovery. Can I ask why you had them removed? Did you have surgery done at a hospital or at the doctor's office? I would have mine done at Kaiser.

The tonsillectomy sites say. Days 7-11 were the worst. I lost no weight because I had to stay hydrated and the dead tissue in my throat tastes and smelled like a cross between roadkill and carbeurator on a good day, so I depended on sugary stuff to relieve me of the taste and smell. I depended on my DH. Liquid dilaudid. Worst part for me is I got a bad cough and so was constantly coughing on top of the damaged tissue: I'd cough and cry. And now I think I have a lot of scar tissue because it constantly feels like something is aight in my throat.

Right now, I regret it.

It was pretty bad, but a good way to lose 10 lbs, and I started at 5'6" and 118. I think that I slept sitting up for a few days, and it definitely kills to swallow. However, I used to be sick ALL of the time. I had a good run of about 15 years when I literally never got sick, then I had kids. Definitely worth it. I would not plan on going to work or taking care of children for at least a week.

I had it down at 26 and it wasn't fun. Took me a full week after to recover and back then (in the 80's) I spent the night at the hospital. Remember the next morning my friend picked me up and I immediately barfed out the window after leaving the parking lot of the hospital.
