Monaco basically is a casino town (btw you can't gamble there if you are a citizen, only a tourist). They don't have income taxes, but they do take up to 54% in payroll tax.

OP here. I thought about these types of countries. But their conditions are about as easy to replicate as if we wanted to become the Vatican. Namely, with the exception of Austria (and I know very little about Austria) they are city-states and less like full countries with all the complexities that attach.

So yes, to that smartass, we should espouse to be more like Germany, Norway, Denmark etc etc etc, not less. They are all robust free market economies that also have solid social programs. You know, places people actually want to live.

Plenty of these countries - Iceland (look particularly at how they came out of the banking fiasco), all the Nordics, Holland, Austria.

You are totally wrong. Nordic countries have some seriously high tax rates (hello, Denmark?), a very low degree of income inequality, robust social programs including retirement and healthcare, and are extremely, extremely socially liberal. Completely the OPPOSITE of the US Republican Party.
