Basically, I would just try to be as organized as possible. Do spend money on boxes and packing tape, you can never have too many! Color coding by room is a great idea. Get all boxes the same size so they stack easily against a back wall in each room. Pack everything you can for each room ahead of time, leaving only 2 boxes of very important supplies for last. Label these "Open first" for each room. Label your dresser drawers and label your boxes "dresser draw, bottom" etc. You can even label your bookshelves.

That way when your mover/friends/family come, you can have them help you unpack. When I moved I just told my friend to unpack and set up my kitchen however she would do it. Later I could move things around (I had two babies at the time).

i'm not a single mom but will be moving w/an 11 month old soon myself. and even with help the thought of it all is so overwhelming. i totally get the whole not being able to just money at the problem. its already costing more for a 2 bedroom so hiring a cleaning person is not really an option.

But asking for and accepting help appropriately has been a huge challenge for me since becoming a mom. I realize that a move may sound like a straightforward logistical event to others, but much like PP of 11-month old I work late, go to be early, and imagining my family getting here during a holiday week and being understandably frustrated at the task ahead of them. OP I just want to say that you are not over thinking this. Im a single mom of an 11 month old who is having trouble moving too. I've already signed a lease on a new place which began this month on November 1st but I am still living at my old place because I just can't seem to get things packed.

I go to work and get off late then I have to put baby to bed and byby then im too overwhelmed/TIRED to pack.

So far I've gone to the new place and cleaned the kitchen and moved one box of dishes there and that was last weekend. I still have to pack up current place and clean and spackle. Not to mention painting and cleaning the rest of the new place.

We closed on our house when our first child was 2 weeks old (lots of unexpected delays on the seller side). Hire movers, get your family to help you pack stuff, and do it as quickly as possible. This is one problem worth throwing money at.

Don't forget to task one family member with the procurement of paper plates, cups and napkins, while sending another out for takeout food for (1) last meal in old place and (2) first meal in new place. Even if it's just (just?!?!) pizza and beer, it's so lovely to know that Vinnie's on the corner is making it and it will arrive at 8:00. And that nothing will have to be washed up afterwards.
