Other than the poop-eating, they are wonderful dogs: loyal, smart, playful and affectionate. If they didn't eat poop, I'd have one today.

If your dog eats worm/bacteria infected poo, he could get a bacterial infection.
Mine did this and got a giardia infection, bloody stools, didn't want to eat and very lethargic.

(I'm not the OP.) My dog knows "leave it" and obeys beautifully...except when confronted with a pile of shit. I can pile treats on his nose or paws and he'll be perfectly still, but it's like the rest of the universe ceases to exist when he's noshing on poo.

But I still love the little guy.

There are a ton of reasons why your dog might be eating poop. Know that it can be a completely normal behavior. There is a theory that dogs eat poop instinctive to prevent predators from tracking them. Also, dogs evolved from wolves. Early domestic dogs were scavengers. They survived by eating human garbage and waste, including poop. Crate trained dogs may get in the habit of eating poop to keep their crates clean. And dogs eat cat poop because it is high in fat and tastes delicious to them!

Sometimes eating poop can be a sign of a nutritional problem, but that is rare. Dogs eat poop because they are dogs. It's gross. But these are the same animals that smell each others butts and lick their own (and other dogs) genitals. They don't behave like humans because they aren't people. They are animals. And animals do all kinds of disgusting stuff.

You should definitley crate train. Make sure to get a crate that is the right size for your dog though. If you get one that is too big they will simply go in a corner. He should be kept crated any time you are not with him. GL!

I am going to the store today to buy pumpkin, pineapple and meat tenderizer to try on his food.

Do a search for meat tenderizer...I don't remember if we put it in our dog's food or on the poop and let her eat it (or both?), but it worked a miracle for our dog who has only done this once every few months for the last decade since breaking her using the tenderizer as a younger dog.

Hounds definitely do this. It does not always make them sick. I would take a hound over most "cockapoo - made up breeds" (aka designer mutts), anyway. True dog people don't do designer mutts. The breeders see the buyers coming a mile away and charge them top dollar for...yup, a mutt. Dumbasses.

OP, you need to house train your dog. Its not that different than a child potty training. Take them outside (the dog, that is) about 5-10 minutes after each feeding. Don't let them free feed. Keep a definite schedule (every 3-4 hours, also one late night, around 11 and one early morning, around 7).

A young dog (under two) will eat 3-4 times per day while they are growing. Be consistent with your timing and praise. You can not "punish" a dog after the fact for messing inside, they don't get it.

Lots of praise when/while they adapt. They will not mess where they sleep (crate), generally; so you might crate him at night to avoid surprises. GL.

I also used to have a dachshund who did this as well! And ate cat sh*t in the neighbors flower bed!
