My dd went into school in Bethesda without being able to read. She learned very quickly and was devouring books by the end of the year, By the end of 2nd grade, she was reading at a fourth grade level.

They'll eventually learn math, too.

One isn't necessarily more important than the other. However, keep in mind that literacy crosses all content areas. There is READING in math!

And critical thinking skills stem from discourse, which should be addresed in all content areas. These skills just don't suddenly appear.
