I don't understand how you could think eve-ee is a more appropriate nickname for Ev-lin. You're talking about pronunciation but then recommending I use a nickname that doesn't sound like the full name at all.
Nicknames do not have to sound like the full name. While Rob is one nickname for Robert, so is Bob. Alex may be common for Alexander, but so is Sandy. As is Peg for Margaret. Ted for Edward, Babs for Barbara and so on.
For the record, I've known several Evelyn's. One went by Lynn. The rest went by Evelyn or Evie (pronounced EE-vee). While (EH-vee) is cute and understandable, I'm another (different from PP) who has never actually heard that in real life. I would probably try to spell it Evy or Evi (like Evian water?) to try and encourage people to pronounce it right, but most people will just assume it's an alternate spelling of EE-vee.
