How many elite athletes have risked their health for a chance at being number one? I would guess most. That's why we watch them.

Anyone who follows cycling knows they have a LONG history of doping. Cycling is doping. Not surprised in the least.

reason I hate Lance is not because he cheated, it was the ferocity with which he attacked his accusers. people he befriended and later turned on, then unleashed an army of lawyers when often they were just responding under oath or when simply tired of lying. plus the way he dumped his wife was obscene.

He stepped down as the CEO from his own cancer foundation and is losing sponsors. He has done a lot to publicize cancer information and helped with charity but what if his cancer is tied to his doping?

I think most people have known for a long time that he's a cheating turd, but who isn't in that sport. Maybe they should just make it legal and be sponsored by pharmaceutical companies.

Yeah, I'm pretty soured on him but I have to say that he and Bruyneel apparently took systematic doping to impressive new levels. You'd want this guy to run your corporation - especially if it involved doing something illegal on a regular basis.

I agree that he doped and that they all doped. I have no respect for Lance as a person (given his cheating ways) however all these guys are supreme athletes, even while doped. There is no amount of doping that would ever give me the endurance and strength and skill to do the Tour. Doping helped them but still, an amazing feat of athleticism.

Where's the beef?

It was the culture at that time. Like driving over the speed limit on highways. Everyone did it. Charging him is like digging up and going over all the film for traffic cameras and singling out that one red Porsche and issuing thousands of speed tickets while ignoring all the other cars that were passing by. Thankfully, the cycling culture has somewhat changed now and probably it's one of the cleaner sports. I hope young riders won't have to deal with this issue anymore in the future.

Not unless the 12-year-old "16-year-olds" at the 2008 Beijing Olympics admit they cheated. There are so many cheaters in professional sports, it's enough to just make you throw up your hands and say, "go ahead and dope (and get cancer from the doping, and ruin your body)!" since probably 90% of athletes are cheating now, anyway.

Not the PP you were responding to, but what do you mean by this statement? Doping has been a part of cycling and especially the Tour since it began. Guys in the 40s and 50s were doing cocaine to fuel themselves up those mountains. Pantani committed suicide awash in drug problems. There wasn't testing, but chances are guys like Eddie Mercxx doped as well. It's ugly, but it's part of the culture of the sport.
