WHO says to BF until 24 mos and it's not because some poor kids can't have clean water or good food. It's because they're still experimenting with food, they don't eat enough quantity to keep up with their needs and they crave the affection.

My 2,5yo is in a Montessori school. He gets dressed by himself and can pour his own juice and *gasp* he still breastfeeds "literally" from the breast.

No, I think a child who breast feeds at 7 is definitely weirder (unless food availability is the issue).

3.5 (I'd finally couldn't do it anymore). But at about 2, I stopped nursing in public and about 2.5 I stopped nursing in front of anyone but immediate family (my mom and sister etc).

My son weaned at almost 3. I didn't breast feed him in public past 18 months though. Between 2-3 years it was a slow weaning process of 3 times a day down to just one before bed and then slowly phasing that out. I don't have a problem with someone breast feeding as long as is okay for both mom and child. However, I question on-demand feeding for a 2-3 year old. I don't think that is developmentally appropriate. Children that age need limits in various areas and I think a child that age can be taught when to separate from mom nursing time in public.
