I think that is likely true and may not be fixable given how DC area is such a convergence point for people from all over the country. If you're from NY, most other people are also "from" NY and so cultural expectations are similar about how to deal with a certain kind of weather. Same for GA. But those NY weather perceptions are pretty different from GA perceptions I have to believe. I would bet the complaining parents come from warmer areas of the country and the parents frustrated about not enough outside time are from colder areas (I'm from PA - we were RARELY inside despite cold/snow).

Isn't that the problem? We are raising a generation of kids whose helicopter parents protect them from even the slightest inconvenience including the weather. Too hot? Stay inside in the air conditioning and sit on your rear end. Too cold? Oh please stay inside and watch television. Grass is wet? For God's sake keep them inside because their shoes might get wet.

Remember that this generation will be making the decisions in 25 years. They will react based on what they were taught in 2012.

Regarding the fat kid pp, I work at our elem school-I swear I only see about 10-20 fat kids and we have a huge school.
I don't think our area has as many fat kids as the nation overall

Fat chance of that happening in Montgomery County. If you let the little dears outside when the grass was wet you would be a principal in North Dakota in no time.

I observed indoor recess once in my daughter's 1st grade class. It wasn't so bad. The kids got a mental break from doing class work. Sure, I'd have preferred she run outside and see her friends from the other classes, but sometimes, it is just not feasible. It believe it is at the principal's discretion to bring recess indoors, so talk to your principal about under what conditions she'll let them still go outside.

I remember going out in the freezing cold for recess back home in Ohio. We have very wimpy kids (and drivers) in this area.

OP, I would have assumed that they would stick the kids in the gym or all purpose room as well, but the truth is that it probably is over capacity unless you're at a very small school. And it would require a LOT of staff time to supervise and clean up, plus at many schools the lunches are staggered while other classes may be using these facilities. My son hated indoor recess during K but now that he's in 3rd grade he doesn't complain as much - he likes to draw and his teacher has a lot of educational games they can play in the classroom.

OP here. I am no where near the complaint stage at this point. I did assume, however, that indoor recess would include time in the gym or the ap room with some equipment so the kids could get some physical energy out. My DD said that it was only quiet time in the classroom (by quiet time I mean books, coloring and board games).
