I think the problem you have, OP (and others who are not recycling), is that you haven't worked out a system that works in your kitchen. I used to find recycling a pain until I got a trash can with 2 parts, so it's easy to just drop things on either side. It's definitely not hard to figure out where to put the cereal box or the juice carton or the food waste. You'll soon realize that most of your trash is recycleable - so you'll end up using the bigger compartment for recycling and your actual waste will drop by about 3/4's.

I only wish there was a compost collection for food waste in DC - then I would have less than one bag of trash per week.

Once you organize yourself, you'll wonder why anyone wouldn't recycle.

Not sure what's happening at your kid's school, but at ours they all sort their lunch trash into different bins. Get with the program!!

I used to not recycle until recently either OP. ( I at least felt really bad about it.) Anyway, our trash company changed this past year and we now have a full size trash can for recycling, instead of the dinky little box we used to have ( I was afraid before the little box would attract rodents if it were filled.)

I started off small. I did not recycle everything that could be recycled at once. I built the habit over the past year though and now our recycle bin is full every trash day.

I am lazy. Perhaps I should just throw my regular trash in the blue bin. That way, I'd be recycling (without the extra effort).

Seriously. When I started recycling, I was astonished at how infrequently we now have to take out our trash. We used to take it out once a day, at the end of the night. But now we take it out once a week. It's kind of fun, actually, to find how many things we can recycle! I know, I am a nerd, but I get sort of jazzed about this.

OP, how often to you have to take out your kitchen trash? I think I would have to do this more than three times a day if I wasn't throwing recyclables into the bin just outside my kitchen door. That would be a waste if time.

If you live in Montgomery County, you should request a tour of the recycling center. There are many people there who pick through the recycling as it passes on conveyor belts. They get the trash out, and separate other things that were mistakenly mixed (like paper and soda bottles). It's an amazing sight. I would assume other jurisdictions are similar.

Yup, biohazards too. Do a bit research and you'll find out several "destinations" for your trash.
