We had a crazy neighbour and we never even started the build. She just thought at every opportunity she'd tell us what to do and what we couldn't do. We ended up moving to a larger home after a couple years rather than build in the face of her craziness.

IMO, I would move into it, be friendly to whomever and let the chips fall. You are through the hard part- the build. Ignoring is always an option if someone is unable to let it go. If you are a young family, especially, most people get that families need space. Just be sure to fill it with kids!

I am really sorry this is happening to you. I had a similar issue and we sold the house rather than move in. There was just no way I could move in that house. The person who was causing the problems would drink a lot of alcohol and do crazy drunk things. Make a police report about the vandalism and trespassing or your builder should if they own the property. If you don't let them know it is unacceptable, they will keep doing it.

I'm not sure tear downs really prop up the value for the houses that remain. Before the tear downs start, people look at those houses as a place to live, not a place to destroy. If you have a well-maintained, updated house in a tear down neighborhood, I'm not sure the value goes up. By virtue of its size and style, people will look at it as a tear down and any improvements you've made are wasted because they aren't important for a tear down. If it's a run down shack, then I agree with your assessment (not the grapes part).

Why are you leaving your awesome neighbors? Is your old house that bad? If not - if it really doesn't seem worth it - sell the new one.

Otherwise, try to meet some of the new neighbors and get a sense of the place socially before you move.

Remember that you're doing them a favor by proping up their values. They should be feeding you grapes and fanning you for helping them out.

We built a new house in an older neighborhood 3 years ago. During the site prep, our site manager spoke with our new next door neighbor, who was less than cooperative/friendly (there was a half-dead tree that sat on the property line - the site prep guys wanted to just take it down, b/c it wasn't going to survive construction. The guy said no - and basically said it was "just because" - he just didn't want to cooperate).

I was very nervous about moving in and how this guy might act around us. In the end, it was a non-issue. Basically he ignored us and we ignored him. The neighbors on the other side were fairly friendly, as were the neighbors across the street.

Obviously, your situation sounds much worse than this. But I would try to take the high road, be generally friendly, and hope that things just settle down.

My old neighborhood, had a similar situation and when we moved in 7 years after they did, they told us it was worth it for the house they wanted, in the location they wanted, and the people who were awful, were always awful, but at least you know it up front so it's easier to find real friends.
