Yes, I agree with PP. The person is aware that what s/he is about to say may be offensive to some. So, the person prefaces with that phrase, maybe to avoid startling the listener. On other hand, it is such a cliched phrase, and throwing it in is done without thinking, since s/he plans to say the racist comment regardless.

I think that's the point. You know what you are about to say could come off as racially offensive so you preface with " I don't mean to sound racist". You obviously wouldn't say "I don't mean to sound racist but I think that Birkenstocks are really comfortable" bc that's not potentially racist.

I am a non-American black woman married to a white man. I sometimes feel like I am accepted/included more because I am married to a white man. At the same time, and I know this will sound strange as I can scarcely articulate it myself, I feel like I am sometimes treated like some kind of pet. I am a 47 year old woman yet I get the "oh you are so cute/pretty/beautiful" comments in that overly nice tone that makes me really uncomfortable. I really don't know how to react to them because they come across as somewhat condescending yet trying to be nice so I am torn between appreciating that someone is, rather cack handedly, trying to be nice yet being annoyed at the condescending tone. I know they would never say the same thing in the same tone to another white lady. Hard to explain but I really cannot relate to women who relate to me this way.

21:47, white hubby/Asian wife isn't exactly a novelty anymore. In fact the Asian Woman bait and switch (all sweet+submissive before marriage/kids, then TIGER MOM RAWR after kids) is something I've seen to depressing extent out here in the wilds of Loudoun.

21:50, you'd probably do as well as your parents + your own life experiences + your own guiders (teachers, etc.) would do. Remember, they've had years of practice at being minorities.

21:21, in the eyes of the ignorant, Asian is seen as white the way Jews/Greeks/Italians were promoted to white people status in the 40s and 50s.

Plus, when they think of a criminal, they think "Crip or Blood" or maybe "MS-13 or Norteno" and not "Tong or Triad." Maybe that's different on the West Coast where the Asian gangs are more active.
