To the PPs talking about leather being "slippery" and "sticky" and needing maintenance, that's only true with REAL leather. Most car seats are not real leather, which I agree is kind of gross in a car. Instead, they are softer, matter (so not slippery) and require no maintenance.
Really?? Is that true? Makes no difference either way, but I find it interesting because they advertise them as leather, don't they?

If your kids get carsick, then I'd go with leather. If not, then go with dark cloth. I much prefer the feel of cloth, but have leather seats in the minivan. 2 of my 3 kids get carsick and the leather has been wonderful for that cleanup.

Another family here with the "eating in the car is only for long trips" rule. We have dark cloth seats in one car and tan leather in the other, both in great condition. My first went through a puking phase, but the puke never really spilled out of the car seat.
We allow drinks in the car in a spill proof cup.

Our kids have consumed half of their lifetime calories in the cloth seats of our minivan. We've taken out the seats and cleaned the seats every couple years. They clean up just fine. Do they look new? No. But they are fine.
If you like the leather, go for leather!

Definitely get the car seat mats from Babies R Us. It caught all the vomit the first time DS threw up in the car (rear-facing).
We have one car with leather seats and one with cloth. I hate the burning thigh issue in the summer, but I imagine I will like the clean up factor as DS gets older.

We managed fine with cloth. If the Money is meaningful to you, then maybe there are better places to spend it?
Cloth works fine, and our never smelled like vomit. We didn't allow dairy products, like milk cartons, or ice-cream, and goldfish can easily be vacuumed out.

we don't eat in the car, but my DD does have motion sickness. puke smell isn't so hard to clean if you get it professionally done. still cheaper than getting leather seats.

My husband's car has leather seats and I hate it. They are burning hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. I much prefer my dark grey cloth seats!

I have cloth seats, dark gray cloth seats, and they're eh. They don't get sticky like leather does which I much prefer although the kids are in carseats still. My kids don't eat much in the car and drinks are usually in a sippy or sport bottle.
