That's ridiculous. If you think that is ghetto, I don't know what your frame of reference is. The 20878 area has many nice family neighborhoods, and yes, there are some quite expensive properties, but I don't think anyone pretends that it is Potomac, or for that matter, wants it to be.

Thanks for the positive post! I would love to live in a place where my chikldren could walk outside their front door and join others riding their bikes etc. I am really looking for that perfect neighbourhood, where everyone knows each other. Any chance we have found it?


I'm the PP, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Aberdeen Park is a neighborhood gathering spot, and there is a Potomac Chase Women's Club that holds regular events like a July 4th bike parade and a Halloween Fun Fest for the kids. There really is a feeling of community, which I didn't have in my previous neighborhood. It's a very active neighboorhood with people out & about, riding bikes, walking dogs, running, etc. When we first moved in, 3 different neighborrhood families came over to introduce themselves and welcome us, one even brought us a cake! Potomac Chase really reminds me of the small, close-knit neighborhood I grew up in back in NJ, which I hadn't been able to find since moving to MD 15 years ago.

Well, I'm interested in the possible 20878 zip code area, but the trouble is the inventory is extremely low, unless you can afford at least $600K (and we'd probably be stretching our budget for that). OP, are you finding much in your budget for that are you're eyeing?

Information on incidents at each school is available on the MCPS website if you dig a little. You might be surprised. Here are a few facts from 2010-2011: Northwest had higher reported incidents of Arson, Attack, Disrespect/Insubordination/Disruption (almost 3x that of Gburg and QO), and twice the amount of Theft incidents than Gaitherburg. Did you hear that? More than the 'tough' Gaithersburg!! Gaithersburg had more Fighting and more Threat incidents than Northwest. QO had fewer incidents of all types than Gaithersburg or Northwest, except it had more incidents of Dangerous Substances than Northwest.

Yes that is what the school system website says but the information is as only good as the people supplying the information. For years Northwest was famous for reporting nothing. Nada. It made it sound like that it was a squeaky clean school. Then they had the armed robbery in the hallway and the police discovered that Northwest was not reporting serious incidents.

If stats show that Gaithersburg has low stats then its bogus.
