Based on your recent replies OP please don't volunteer even when your kids get to the school, you sound like a Peach.

I volunteer for other events like homeless shelters, cancer fundraisers, children in need and disabilities, etc. I thought it would be nice to help out at my child's future school. I have always been active in school and the community. It got me into ivy league schools and gave me interesting topics to talk about during job interviews.

I used to have a demanding work around the clock job before having children. Now I work part time and my children attend preschool. Attending a PTA meeting here and there is not a large block of time.

From the overwhelming negative responses, I will not participate.

To become a PTA member at our school you have to have a child with student ID to even sign up for the PTA. Since your child doesn't even have an ID you wouldn't be able to "join". But I don't think its unheard of for your to participate in PTA sponsored events to support the school. Like attending and fall festival or fun fair or auction that was sponsored by the PTA. Your child would enjoy it and you would get to know people and about the school all why supporting the school.

As a parent of an elementary school, I would find it to be very creepy and off putting if there were adults with no affiliation to the school joining the PTA and staffing school activities. Too much access to the kids by someone who is not part of the school.

One thing to remember is that the afternoon activities are year by year, and the providers and quality might change between now and then. It's not something that you can really set in stone now in preparation for your child's entry.

We joined the PTA listserve in the spring before my child started K. And we attended a few school events--halloween party, concerts, other events open to the public. But formally joining and volunteering? You should enjoy one last year with the relatively minor requirements of parental participation that come with daycare. It will get crazy soon enough.

OP, are you the same person who wanted to go to the open house?

Being active in the PTA would be weird. As others have mentioned, tagging along with a friend to help run the bake sale might seem ok, but chairing the Fall Festival would be creepy.

Wait until the winter or spring before DC enters to introduce yourself to PTA members. Ask to be added to email lists, etc...

I would wait until your child attends the school
