How much is the bus? Are the routes extensive? Is it working well?

MY DC use to attend private school and ththey used textbooks in K.

Yes, I have plenty of evidence.
I have worked for years with the education department of our embassy. I have called dozens of private schools both in the greater Washington area and in NYC. Except for 2 alternative schools where students study according to their interests (even then, there are textbooks used as reference), not one single school has told me that they use teacher made materials only. They all have admitted to using some type of textbook or workbook for most subjects. This does not mean teachers don't use other resources for enrichment. I have heard teachers say they teach from several sources. So instead of buying each workbook for each student, they rely on copies. That's not the same as teacher made curriculum.

Very chaotic. I hope the get their act together soon.

Not the PP, but it might be cost. Parents must pay for the bus, and I don't think it's cheap. Probably cheaper for two families to join forces and carpool, assuming they have the time.

I attended a top private school and never saw a text book until 7th grade, and that was only for French class.

Same experience and as an adult I have toured/visited some of the top privates in the DC and NYC area and the ES schools don't use textbooks. My experience is that textbooks for middle school (which could include 6th grade) and above.

At the risk that those unfamiliar with the Capitol Hill public/charter school divide don't follow, I can't help but be a little amused by parents who make huge detours around their (neighborhood) public schools because they're oh-so-conventional [i.e. with textbooks, worksheets and all], sending their kids off into the cutting edge of new models of learning, only to find themselves emerging at the other end by a desire for the most conventional and back to basics. Previously we were told not to use rely on or even use textbooks at DCPS. Sometimes dated, need to differentiate, focus now on common core, not aligned to DC CAS, sometimes there are no textbooks or not enough for everyone, few teacher additions or supplementary materials. Math and science nearly always use a textbook though, so yes lots of Internet researching etc. Don't blame the teachers blame the fact that DCPS unlike other jurisdictions does not have a curriculum. Yes, they are working on it.

Hate trying to get my child across town! Why am I in a carpool with high maintenance neighbors? Don't know, but doubt we'll last the year.
