I've heard this info all my life, but I know from years of livingthat I can pretty much eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables as I want (including grapes, watermelon, etc) and not gain a pound. If I eat a candy bar or other fattening dessert every day for a week, I'll definitely gain a pound or two!
