Julia Child's Beef Saute with Cream and Mushroom Sauce and Julia Child's Wild Rice. My mom gave me her copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking but I haven't made anything yet (keep meaning to make Julia's Boeuf Bourguignon). My mom made it every Christmas Day. It was her nod to gourmet. I also loved her Porcupine Meatballs, her Betty Crocker Pizza made from a kit in a box, and her spaghetti with meat sauce.

My mom is not a good cook, but my grandmother was. She made the best borscht - with the sour cream blended in. I hated beets, but loved her borscht. Her galumpkis (stuffed cabbage rolls) were also very good.

"Special Milk" after school with homemade cookies. It was milk with an egg frothed in with a bit of sugar and vanilla and cinnamon. We all sat at the kitchen table and had our snack and talked about the school day. I have few better memories of childhood.

Apple pie! My mom used to make the meanest apple pie. She used to make it from scratch and the crust was out of this world!

That's how my mom makes chocolate chip cookies, too, that recipe and Crisco. I don't like any other chocolate chip cookies as much as I like those.

My mom is not a great cook, but she made delicious cookies. My favorites were her ginger snaps, though they are really more like little molasses cookies. Chewy and sweet with a subtle ginger bite.

When I was in college, my mom gave me a handwritten book of all of my favorite of her recipes. Cincinnati chili, spiced peaches, German pancake, fruit cobbler, shrimp spread and a few others. I pull that out whenever I need comfort food!

My grandmother used to make the best waffles I have ever had. To this day, I have still never had a better waffle. When she died, we found her recipe and found out why they were so good--she used melted lard.

Mmmmmmmmmmmm... most of it was stuff that other people gag at, lol

-cabbage and kiebasa in the crockpot, with spicy chinese mustard, served with mashed potatoes
-kale and "smoked neck" <- I'm not even sure what that is! also in the crock pot

fried oysters
Peach cake (she still makes this)
