600 in 3rd grade to a 480 on the Math6 SOL (in 5th) DD very dissapointed but I think it sounds like he did pretty darn well.

I taught 4th grade math this past year and celebrated when anyone got a passing score. At that point, I couldn't care less if it was an advanced pass (though I know it matters more to parents and kids on an individual basis). I honestly just wanted them to pull through because that test was BRUTAL. With the teaching conditions in place for my particular school and the types of questions on those tests, there was no way for me to prepare my students nearly as much as I would have liked. I had one student out of 65 get a 600. And there were plenty of "gifted" kids. To put it into perspective, 100% of my kids passed the year before, with about 6 who got a 600 and 3/4 of which advance passed.

My child also had a 600 in third grade and a 478 (7 incorrect) this past year in 4th grade. I heard that scores across the board were lower at our school. Not only was the test more difficult, but last year if you had 7 incorrect it was still considered pass advanced. This year it is 5 incorrect for pass advance.

I'd be ecstatic if my DS got a 470 on his math SOL.

470 isn't bad considering the "increased rigor" of the tests and the drop in scores across the state.

We just got ours. DS had 600 in math for 3rd grade. This year, he dropped to 470. He definitely struggled in a few areas this past year, but drop was much more than I expected.

We didn't receive the scores for my ES child yet.

What's a "good" score. I'd say it depends. Over 400 is passing. You know your child. What's a "good" score for one may not be as good for another.
