Also, you can take it repeatedly if you think you are close to being a National Merit or lesser Scholar. So many are now starting in 9th grade and trying to improve their scores each year. My parents made the mistake of just not knowing so I blew it off thinking it was just practice. I didn't understand why another kid in my gifted class - upon receiving his results (he had been prepped) - jumped up and shouted that he was now a semi-finalist. Ihad no idea what he was talking about. He made it. Based upon my GPA, test scores, I.Q. and later successes, i might have too, if I had been prepped and knew that the test counted towards something.

Yes, we most definitely prepped DC and DC went in and felt confident about the test (10th grade). Next year is SAT and ACT (llth). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSAT/NMSQT

10th grade is practice, 11th grade is the NMSQT qualifier.

Incorrect. In our school it is administered in the 10th grade (we just finished). It can be administered and be accepted by National Merit even in the 9th grade. The llth grade if in 9-12 is the LAST date for qualification. See para. 1. national merit. http://www.nationalmerit.org/nmsp.php#entryreq

It is a practice for a practice test for 10th graders. Do not prep. Spend that time doing your homework and reading good books.

How are they going to handle the change that's coming to the SAT in 2015?
