sister I am with you, but unfortunatly look at the talk on this board out of supposedly "educated" women. We have a long way to go. Instead of lifting up these young girls (really children) women want to tear them down. And you know what is worse than being a woman getting torn down, is being a BLACK woman. Look at the black on black hate for Gabby's hairstyle.

i believe all women should look as if they are ready to walk the red carpet when they compete in olympic sports. their hair should be done, makeup flawless, and consider wearing an evening gown as well with pumps.

And then there are some who apparently criticize Gabby Douglas for her ponytail. I heard this in NPR, in part:

"On Twitter and Facebook, black women shared their disapproval of Douglas' ponytail, the same hairstyle all of her teammates sported. It appeared unkempt to some, didn't have enough gel for others and a few demanded a chance to make over her style."

pulling back into a tight bun I get but don't think the 10 extra barretts are necessary. Just spray the sides down. it all looks so childish and given their already tiny frames, its just even weirder. but the flatted half pony tail thing to me just looked flat out lazy, thats what I do when I am leaving the gym. Cmon ladies, you know a billion people are watching you can make a full pony tail or bun.

Kerri Strug had a freaking mom cut! She couldn't even have achieved a ponytail and there was no need since her hair was so short it couldn't get in her face.

This. You don't have to worry about anything other than performing. Even when I had short hair, it could still get in my eyes. I think women in 2012 would much rather have hair they can pull back into a severe pony tail than a Mary Lou Retton cut.
