I loved doing this as volunteer work in college, but the salary didn't seem very appealing to me long-term.

I work regular school hours. I imagine starting salaries for FT teachers are 45K or so. I have been around for a long time so I make substantially more. Not a great salary but it has always been worth it to me. My students are wonderful, motivated and appreciative. It is a joy to work with them.

Comptuter system manager. Yes, I love my job. I'm a problem solver and every day is another set of puzzles to resolve. In 20 years, I have not had two days that were the same or that I did the same thing without something new that needed to figure out how to resolve. I hate stagnant jobs. I was a programmer for a couple of years before this and found that to be monotonous.

I love my students, who are smart and thoughtful, and I love my colleagues who are also smart and thoughtful. I'm tenured, so I set my own schedule at this point (am away at the beach with my children for the month). Not paid a huge amount but really could not be happier.

Would love to have your career, PP. I am a researcher in a big organization. I publish well, love my job, but hate my boss and the bureaucracy. Used to have more research autonomy, but under the current budget environment, everyone is nick picking, and my insecure micro managing boss is driving me nut!! Seriously considering a career switch here.

Another very happy government lawyer here. I work in a small agency with great people, at least in my office. It is hectic and busy (except for lunchtime on dcum), and the days pass quickly. It's also very flexible, and any stress stays at the office.

Another professor, but I have a heavy teaching load(hard money job). I love teaching and advising college students. I'm in my office ~35 hours a week, which suits my life with 2 kids under 2 yrs.

I used to love my job (govt. lawyer/manager) but for the past 5-6+ yrs have been tired of the overwhelming mediocrity of managers and the chronic dysfunctionality of my (large) office.

Constructive feedback no longer apparently welcome so I LOVE the flexibility, but don't love the job anymore and love that I can retire in 3 yrs.

I do not envy the coming 20-30 yrs of Feds, it will be harder to hire & retain the kind of quality people I've worked with (staff, not mgmt) over the past 25 yrs....
