If you're up for a little day trip - how about the Aquarium in Baltimore. Tons of fun for toddlers.

4-5 pm is a great time to hit the pool. Many DC pools are open late today and tomorrow due to the heat. If you're in Foggy Bottom, you're not far from Francis, which is thought to be one of the better pools for small kids. (But it's closed on Tuesdays.)

We also spend a lot of time at the library, just reading, looking at pictures, drawing. For some reason, the broken grubby crayons at the library are more appealing than the new ones we have at home. Similarly, toys that are boring at home are more interesting in a cafe. So I get snacks and drinks and play solitaire on my phone while my daughter mutters to a small selection of little dolls for an hour.
