You dredged up a very old thread to ask this question.

Our IKEA and other knock off track pieces fit with the wooden Thomas, but they aren't as nice (by far).

There are three different sizes. They make metal ones that do fit on the regular wooden tracks.

Been a while since anyone has posted, but I too have run into issues with the Fisher Price battery operated Thomas running on our Ikea wooden tracks. I used a dremel tool to add a small chamfer to each piece of track which allows Thomas to run along them better, but he still gets stuck pretty frequently on turns. Has anyone found a fairly inexpensive brand of wooden track that works well with the battery operated Thomases? (or is it Thomasi?) We have a few Thomas branded accessory pieces and they seem to work well with the motorized versions of the engines so Thomas branded track may be the way to go, I was just looking for a cheaper alternative from Ebay or Amazon.

We discovered at Christmas that the battery-operated Thomas trains (the ones sized for the wooden tracks) do not run on the Ikea tracks. The non-electric Thomas trains are compatible with the Ikea tracks, but the battery ones have an extra bump on the underside that does not fit the Ikea tracks. We managed to file away most of the bump, but it's still not great.

These adaptors make Ikea tracks compatible with most Thomas and brio wooden and motorized trains. they work with any track system.

Does anybody know which wooden tracks work with the new Fisher Price battery operated Thomas trains? Mine get stuck on the Ikea wooden track.

For thoose who feel like your spending a ton on Thomas. Or are just getting into it. Theese are very inexpensive tracks that fit with any Wooden Thomas train and tracks. We bought the 52 piece set and the unique set and we now have enough track to build just about anything. The are nicer than the ikea ones (I find they don't fit as nicely with other tracks) and cost a fraction of the price.

I have friends who have boys and they LOVE Thomas. I positive the one boy has at least 200 trains. But I never buy Thomas stuff for their birthdays because I have no idea where to even begin with this shit. We find out next Wednesday what our second child is and while I would love a boy, part of me fears having to enter the black hole that is Thomas the Train if he is.

ok I feel your pain and I think I have finally worked it out

1. The take and Play is a set unto itself designed for traveling. it packes up into little carry boxes that fold out into a set. the good thing about them is that if you want to collect the entire set of engines i think this one covers it and the trains are cheep. **It has the die cast trains which can also be pushed along on the trackmaster tracks (one wheel on the outside one inthe middle) (I have seen some wooden tracks that have a roadway on the other side which you could use the take and play on)

2. The trackmaster are primarily for battery and remote control trains - big bucks and you only get a few engines you can buy - not a huge range in australia BUT they do work on wooden tracks.
**we got given one and we converted the coupling system to have a magnet!! now it pulls all the other ones

3. Wooden has the most available to you in terms of extras and it fits with IKEA stuff too. NOTE if you wanted a battery operated train like the trackmaster you can!!!!! there is a thomas that has a push button on his back instead of the trackmaster flick switch and a magnet coupling system

Conclusion they have you by the short and curlies especially now they have MEGA BLOCKS Thomas too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My solution was to buy the take and play cause its cheep and easy and great if you need to buy a $3 toy for a bribe!!!! and let the relatives buy the other stuff. they normally come in their own little world so can be enjoyed on their own.

Hope that helps

My kid loves the Thomas trains. Really. It started with Thomas storybooks that he received as gifts at his 2d birthday. At first I couldn't deal with the mechanical stuff. But it's definitely grown on all of us. If you listen to early episodes with famous narrators, especially the ones that Ringo narrates, how can you resist? I think what finally hooked me was when I heard Sir Topham Hatt chide Thomas for causing "confusion and delay". He's got a few engines now and Rocky the crane and they work just fine on wooden track. It's all spread out on the living room floor -- track shape changes 2 or 3 times a week.
