Oh, I completely agree with Jeff. If it's not in your neighborhood or local school then it's someone else's problem. My kid goes to a good out of boundary school. The PTA view of the school is help our (GT) kids first and forget about the kids who are bussed in from southeast--they're lucky to be here. What? Every child deserves a safe school and neighborhood where they can play outside without getting shot.

I was working at a school .6 miles from the shooting. I have taught in a school less than a mile from the shootings all last year.

I was hugely affected by it and I didnt come to DCUM to discuss it. I know most DCUM users dont know anything about anything east of the river.

Sadly, there's little coverage in part because shootings in this part of DC are no longer "news" by the traditional standard ("dog bites man, not news. man bites dog, that's news"). there is a perception, right or wrong, that there are pretty frequent shootings in SE DC. of course this is sad but for people who don't live there and don't understand what it is like to live there, this might seem like everyday life. coupled with the arguments against "gentrification" and the excuses about why people who grow up poor should be excused from accountability for crime, there's not a lot of understanding/interest.

i fully expect to be kicked off dcum now.
