I was 31 and DH was 33.

32 and before the housing boom in DC. Was so blessed to sell it 5 years later and had enough equity to pay off almost $100k in student loans and put 20% down on new house. Downside is I will need to stay where I am for a little while longer to entirely recover what I paid for my current home.

I was 28, DH was 33. We paid $600k for a row house on the Hill before the market peaked. This was back when you were able to get an 80/10/10 loan, so we only had to put 10% down.

My husband bought a house here (in Falls Church) in 1998 when he was 30 ($245K using an 80-10-10). I moved in with him and we just bought a new (larger) house this year right before I turned 40. So techinically I was 40 .

28, when I was single.
32, bought another when we were engaged.
33, bought current house in the District.

Purchased 2 years ago, at 28 and 27 yrs old. Maryland.

I was 27 and the year was 1999. I bought a house on $42K of income as a single woman after 5 years of work. I miss the $1,100 mortgage (all inclusive) on that $145K place, especially now that I have a $2,500 mortgage on a $560K place. (Still single.) on the bright side, interest rates are MUCH better now. Mine was over 7% back in 1999, which meant that the "truth in lending" statement on $145K showed about $300K in total payments I'd have to make.

Some of my friends are in their 40's and still rent.

We moved here when I was 28 but didn't buy (SFH) until 10 years later at 38. It always seemed like SFH prices were just outside the realm of what we could afford and we didn't want a condo or TH.

24 in 2005 and cant get rid of it so i now own 2 properties not by choice

We just bought our first. Me 39, DH 40. We are 10 years and 15 years into our careers, two kids. 500K, 5 bedroom home, our forever home if all goes well.

Prior to that, we rented the same townhouse for 10 years.

Could definitely NOT have afforded such a house in Bethesda on his small salary alone.

Don't feel bad, OP! Just chug your way through, don't look at the Joneses, be frugal. Your retirement self will thank you.

I was 24 and DH was 25 when we bought our first home, a townhome. We paid about $130k and the interest rate was a whopping 12% (it was in 1990). Then the housing prices dropped way down, and we had to wait 10 years until we could sell it for any kind of profit.

OP here. We have an 8 month old too so that makes me feel better ha ha. It is okay, after reading this I realized I apparently needed to buy 10+ years ago or way far out to buy before 35 or so. Neither of which are options, well unless someone gives me a time machine.

We sold it in 2003 and bought on Cap Hill

We were very fortunate with our timing.

However, we are still broke now but have a lot of equity in the house - kids are so expensive.
