Subject: How to write a thank you note when you don't know what they gave?
Could you send an email to EVERYONE who was at the party explaining the situation and ask if the people who sent X, Y and Z could please let you know so you can thank them properly?
I once got an email like this after a friend's wedding - a couple of gifts had been separated from their cards. As it turned out, my gift was among those, so I was glad she felt comfortable asking us. And I sent a similar email after my daughter's last bday - one gift had no card.

Your guests will likely be charmed by your story AND by the fact that you wrote the thank you note. So many people see to neglect this basic courtesy when their guests have gone to the trouble of trying to find a thoughtful gift.
