I have a coworker who is obsessed with things like this. Every year when the Westminster Dog Kennel show is on, it is like all he talks about.

It's very weird to me. I just don't get it.

No one said they tie up their dogs all day. I leave my dogs out on nice days (60-80 degrees, low humidity). They are not tied up, mistreated or abused. They are rescue dogs, up to date on their shot and both are spayed. They are clean, healthy, loved dogs who are inside 90% of the time. Don't insinutate that anyone on that thread had their dogs chained or tied to a tree.

My husband and I have our own pets and foster. Guess what, my house smells like dog, there is fur on my couch, sometimes they pee in the kitchen. Some days I wish we could be like our other young childless carefree friends and decide to head off for the weekend on a whim. Then my husband reminds me that we are doing good in the world for creatures that can't defend themselves. I know that it was upsetting, but something needs to be done and the people who give their time to homeless animals already know all of the problems. The people we need to reach are the ones who didn't even know there was an issue

It was horrific and you can't really know the extent until you watch it. Piling "Fresh" dogs on top of the dead ones and hearing them screaming as they are killed. I wish more people would watch it and understand that we condone this but not demanding differently.

ANd some of those dogs were purebreds. But, the look in all their eyes as they are stuffed into that tank and listening to them . . . it really made it, well, real for me.

I also recall that there is a saying that is something like this: you can judge the greatness of a country by how its animals are treated. If that is the case, this is a sad testament on this one that we allow this to continue. The solution? More spay/neuter. Humane euthansia. It works. Yes, it costs money. BUt so does keeping animals in the shleters for prescribed periods, gassing them and disposing of the bodies. And, in any event, numbers are not always what is most important. Rather, it's the right thing to do.

Yes, it is a very very big problem in the South. There is a rescue group in the DC area called Homeward Trails (http://www.homewardtails.org) who rescues dogs and cats from overpopulated shelters in rural VA and WV and brings them to the DC area for adoptions. I volunteered with them a few years ago. They are all so awesome! If you are concerned about this issue, I urge you to check out their website and consider getting involved! They need -- and will take -- any help you can give, big or small: volunteering to hold a leash at an adoption event, donation of old towels for bedding, offer to foster a cat or dog while it's waiting for a forever home, etc. Please check them out!

So many people don't understand or know about the horrors of overpopulation - there's a lot of ignorance in the south, still, and many of the dogs are transported up north to rescues because there's little help for the dogs. I'm glad you understand, though! Just wish more people were aware.

Seriously, a dog gas chamber scene? That would really be something that I would not be able to unhear or unsee. No thank you. What's next? Schindler's List for dogs?
