Its human nature to strive for power and approval and so much of dating and marriage is more about this than the backdrop of love. Our cultural ideal of beauty generally idealizes tall, athletic, thin/healthy weights, straight hair....etc etc. Most people pursue this aggressively. The same question can be asked about chubby girls, unathletic boys, and red heads. I think that 18 year olds are mostly shallow and are going for someone "perfect"- as people age they become more open minded about what makes someone loveable, worthwhile and attractive. Encourage your son to cultivate traits that boost his confidence...

Love of my life was 5'5 like me. DH is 5'7. Dated and had other serious relationships with men 5'10 and above but looks mean little to me.
