Sorry, is sarcasm not something understood on your planet?

The mark of true intelligence is when someone says, "I don't know." I love and respect doctors who do this (look stuff up). It is impossible to know everything.

Not bothered at all!

+1

+2. This actually happened to me, and I was glad that she was taking the time to make sure that I was getting the best, most accurate information.

I had an inexperienced doctor and fell in love with him for this very reason. He took the time to really look into the literature. I appreciated the effort, for sure.

A dermatologist I saw for a concern I had did this (though he went to his office to do so; I waited in the examination room). I believe he suspected what my particular issue was, but given it is not too common he likely went to check his reference materials. This was reassuring given there could be new information on the condition, etc. I appreciated his attentiveness and thoroughness.

Oh, and yes, I'd worry, but no one can know everything.

I'd be quite happy that they didn't just try to pacify me with an answer they made up or guessed on.

I'd feel good about it unless the book was called "Medicine for Dummies" or "Internal Medicine 101."

I would be ok with it, IF they pulled out a current book - I had a dr pull out a 2006 edition (in 2012) to look something up. It was the kind of book that clearly comes out every year (hence the huge date on the side). I didn't go back.

Anonymous wrote:I left a practice that did this. But, it was more of an issue with a fit for me as a whole with the practice. It seemed that they mainly saw older people struggling with age-related issues. I was a nursing mom, and needed medication for something rather common. It took the PA and the doctor nearly 45 minutes to figure out what to give me, and I had to direct them towards the resources to find out the information. My husband is also pretty athletic, and had some questions about sports-related injuries, and they weren't very helpful. We switched to a family practice, and have found that they are more in tune with our needs.

That is totally different than simply consulting a reference guide. I would flee from that practice, too.

Actually, I'd say OP is a fool if she thinks doctors SHOULD know everything, especially general practioners.

I'd be glad to have a doc who doesn't think he/she knows it all.
