sounds like the words of someone ashamed of the past. he might seem racist since we are so far removed from the atrocities of this nations past. he speaks truth and sometimes the truth hurts.

This +100, you may be able to call Sharpton many names, but he has never presented himself as a racist.

What was racist? When he said "cracker is used for a certain individual with certain behaviors? Like a pp above said, if you don't get it you don't get it. Don't assign the racist term to something you don't understand.

Correct. You can only be racist if you are white, everything else is "you don't get it"

And? There are things about all races and ethnicities I will probably never understand and that is fine. We are all different and that is fine, too. Somehow we have come to a point where we think every and everything must be understood at all times in order to be accepting and respectful of it. It's okay to not understand or even agree with everyone at all times.

If you don't get it, you don't get it. Context is everything...

Yeah, that racist moniker is a stretch for Rev. Sharpton. But to each it's own. Well, that's water under the bridge now. he said what he said, it was explained to complete satisfaction. Do you really think it was an issue, wouldn't you think we would have been insulted?

Rev. Sharpton was recalling a moment when he was on the Bill Maher's HBO Show. Where he (Sharpton) and some rappers were discussing the usage of the n-word. Sharpton was deeply opposed to the usage of the word but the rappers kept referring to him as a n*gga. Well as fate would have it, one of the rappers was arrested in days after for a drug charge and the (rapper) called Sharpton for assistance. The rapper said he needed Sharpton assistance because as a rapper his civil rights have been violated. Well, Sharpton was still feeling the sting of being constant called a n*gga by this rapper just days earlier, therefore responded to him, that n*ggas don't have civil rights. Which brought laughter to the audience; as I stated earlier it was extremely tense.

Although the word is buried but sometimes you have to visit the grave to pay your respects and offer reflections.l

The thing is this: The use of the word is attached to a certain mentality that can't be erased with the mere non-use of the word. Imagine being completely stripped of who you are, degraded, then asked to teach your children something different. The mentality is the problem. The word is only a symptom.
