Wellesley School grads told they are nothing special at commencement

It’s graduation season, time to heap accolades upon those who achieved by graduating. Right?

Some 400 graduates at Wellesley High School in Wellesley, Mass. were at the receiving end of a different kind of speech. Indeed, the chief theme of the commencement address is “You are not special.” David McCullough Jr., the school’s English teacher who made the speech, says, “If everyone is special, no one is”

“You’ve been pampered, cosseted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble-wrapped . . . You’ve been feted and fawned over and called sweetie pie. Yes, you have.”

I think the significance is the Mme Lagarde counts her experience as "Holton Girl" as a factor in her career success. Always nice to see a Holton Girl do well!

No, I think it's great she was there - but I would really have liked to hear something she said, something inspiring!

Maybe other women are just so used to powerful women they don't think it's a BFD to get one to speak at a dippy little high school graduation. Small potatoes.

Maybe other women resent a powerful woman

It's very impressive. Gonzaga had Mother Teresa talk in the 80's.

Talking about impressive women Nana Meriwether is Miss Maryland - was runner up for Miss USA this week. She was a two-time All-American volleyball player at UCLA. She went to Sidwell.
