I wouldn't send my children. The teachers are not teaching lessons and it's just a general "see you next year/have a good summer" type thing with the students.

In past years, students were "housed" in the gymnasium all day....when I found this out, I pulled them out for the final days. Too little supervision and too much opportunity for mischief (including settling end of the school year beefs).

Here is my feeling, say fine stay home. You can spend a couple hours reading a book. We can work on these math facts. Or whatever is academically appropriate for your kids age. School may look more interesting.

I take a different approach, and I think context matters. I feel that if the school system is failing to respect my kids' time, they cannot insist that the kids do their part and show up. It's rude. The time they spend watching stupid movies (earlier this week, selections from a Monty Python film), preparing for and taking standardized tests, and cleaning up classrooms is offensive to me. They are supposed to be there to learn. For example, my 9th grader asked me last week if she could go in late, because she was having a double PE class period because of the standardized testing schedule. For the double PE, they were going on a bowling field trip, and if kids didn't go bowling they would have to sit in the cafeteria and do worksheets. No way I was going to make her haul her ass out of bed at 5:30 to catch a bus at 6:30 in order to either go bowling or fill out worksheets.

I agree. In my house this wouldn't even be up for discussion. School is in session, they are in school, end of story.
