If you have never smoked you don't know what it's like.
If you have and was able to quit, then consider yourself lucky. Many in my family try and try and just can't do it. It's a very strong addiction.

You chose to start smoking, knowing it was bad for you, knowing people get addicted to nicotine, so I really just don't feel sorry when people come to find out, hey, it's bad for me and it's hard to quit because I'm addicted! No shit, Sherlock.

Have we forgotten that smoking is an addiction? Yes some smokers are rude and need to be reminded that they need to smoke in an appropriate place.
No one who has ever seriously smoked would think or suggest that stopping is easy. I smoked from before birth (dad smoked 2 packs of Paul Malls a day) and then as an adult until I was about 35. It's been 15 years. You can do it!

I've been able to stop for short periods of time, because I really want to and the habit makes my hands look hideous, but when I'm stressed, hideous hands and potential of permanantly damaging my nails is the last thing that is on my mind. I've never smoked, but when I hear about people who have quit for good, I think that is a tremendous feat.
