Op here. In response to the "it sounds like you want him to do this not him". In all honesty we both want to have a higher hhi. We grew up upper middle class and want to provide that security for our children. We want a nice house etc and you can't get that on a 200k hhi in the dc area. So he needs to make more money, we just need to figure out the route to get there. My warning potential is not as high as his. My field maxes out at maybe 80 to 85k. Please don't flame me for this post!

Yes, you went to a crappy school and needed a better name to get your foot in the door. As explained before, that is different than the OP. OP has a decent legal job, while you barely went to law school. By the way, it is 2012; my guess is that you are talking about sometime a decade or so earlier when BigLaw was a whole different game and even though they were raising the salaries, they were still being run old school, making partners from the ranks and partners having loyalty that extended deeper than their wallets. All of this is irrelevant to OP. But, I'm glad you made it work for you.

I am the poster who got the llm (not in tax), and it was by far the best decision i ever made. totally changed my career and my life around. I owe my entire career (now a partner) to the llm, and I know many others like me - went to schools like st. thomas, got the llm, and now work for biglaw.

No LLM is a worthless degree and especially in this market he may take on more debt and have no job offer.
