Is there an expected timeline for the Williamsburg elementary school? When do they expect to build it, and whats the timeline for deciding on boundary changes?

There are no boundary changes in the works right now.

The Ashlawn addition and the new school next to Williamsburg will break ground this fall. Architects will be chosen over the summer.

The school board is leaving open the idea of converting Madison to a new school. Same with Reed. The proposed third Arlington middle school would need a large site like Madison. Or maybe HB will move out of the Stratford building (unlikely).

I think they will be able to break ground on the new school this Fall (same with Ashlawn addition) as the county already has the money to do so. From what I have learned attending the planning meetings, the new school will be ready in 2 years.

The real discussion about boundaries will likely begin in Jan/Feb. I think this last poster would be the most correct in saying they'd grandfather 5th graders in but not the younger. You have to fill that school.

W/re grandfathering, I have to assume there would be some sort of sliding scale. If your kid just finished kindergartern, then no they probably won't get to stay at their current school. Otherwise, it would take 6yrs to completely fill the new elementary.

I could see that the might not move 5th graders, for example, and do the first school year as K-4. As it is APS does have policies on going to out-of-boundary schools. These came into play when they looked at moving boundaries a few years ago. Some of the factors included trying not to split siblings as a result of the rezoning.

15:12 - I have absolutely no authority to say this, but I bet that if they grandfathered kids to stay in their current schools, the special ed kids would probably be at the top of the list, and you could probably make a pretty good case for getting to stay, based on that. good luck! (we're located the same distance from Nottingham and Williamsburg, though we're to the East of both, so who knows where we'll end up.)

What's the timeframe for building a new school?

Does anyone know whether, if your child is currently enrolled at one school and your home is then slated for a different school whether the child can be grandfathered into their "old" school? (Maybe it's too early to ask this?)

I grew up in McLean and when I was in elementary school our "home" higschool was Langley, then they switched and the home highschool became McLean. Neighbors who had started at Langley got to finish there, kids who hadn't started yet went to McLean.

I am particularly interested about this as we are smack in the middle of Williamsburg and Nottingham, on one of the streets that connects Williamsburg Blvd and Little Falls/Yorktown. My DC is in the SpEd program and has some significant issues that our SpEd teacher (at Nottingham) really has a handle on - she's a godsend to us and I wouldn't want to move away from her.

Of course, who knows how long it takes to build a school, we might be done with elementary before the school is even ready...

If you go to the page on the APS website talking about all of this you can find all the historical documentation. Among the original sets of possible recommendations were conversions of Madison and other facilities including the Reed School back into standard elementary schools. The current proposal does not include those options, as the PP mentioned.

no changes to madison center are in the proposal. The changes are:

New Elementary schools:
Williamsburg - neighborhood school
Carlin Springs/Kenmore - choice school
