I'm sorry but where do you live that you still use the word retarded to describe someone? I haven't heard that term used as anything but derogatory in quite some time

no, I was being 100% serious. my retarded uncle was a great, great man and a great part of my family, but he loved hard work and loved being outside. so he would literally mow my lawn from our driveway to the neighbor's driveway (not stopping at the boundary) and when not doing that he would be out in the garden picking weeds, etc. So in our situation, it would be silly to have a handicapped parking space.

I don't know why you are being so hard on the OP. I would assume the same as her, and now others are showing why it is important in some circumstances. my uncle was retarded (RIP), and he would work hours and hours on a farm, and when visiting us he would want to mow our entire lawn all day. so clearly not all retarded folks would need a handicap tag, so I'm guessing they only give them out when warranted.

Congenital heart defects are very common in kids with Down's syndrome. Chances are high the child has had multiple open heart surgeries and has limited capacity for exercise related to diminished cardiac output. Just because the child can walk, does not mean the child can walk very far.

P.S. But if the tag is for someone who's not with the mother or the child, they shouldn't be parking there.

Any number of possibilities here, none of which I think are related to the child.

-- Mom could have a nonvisible disability, as several have mentioned.
-- DAD could have one, but not be on this trip.
-- Hell, a grandparent could live with them.
-- Mom might have bought the tag on the black market. This is evidently a problem.
-- Or, as others have mentioned it could be related to the child. Or ANOTHER child with disability.
