this bugs me too. I got seriously ill w/ cancer when my kids were 4 years and 18 mos old, and they remain very careful about my well-being. I feel like these movies w/ dead or dying moms would be upsetting to them(and me), but they are hard to avoid. (I was also wary of the evil stepmother stories, because I wanted them to have good impressions of stepmothers, in case I really did die and they got one someday. PS. I have been fine lately and these impacts seem to be fading. So maybe more movies will be in our futures.)

"We bought a Zoo" is based on a real family where the mom had died.

The real question is where are Max and Ruby's parents?

Gives a way for a romantic element... so the dad can go chase some woman whose husband died.

I suppose its better than having affairs in the kids movies.

Completely agree! (Same for Jane Austen novels - the mom is usually dead or completely inadequate. "Sense and Sensibility" is an interesting exception.)

The mother in Sense and Sensibility is also inadequate - lacking in sense, overflowing with sensibility.

Parents are dead in virtually every novel that my children love. I believe it is done just to avoid any diversion, negative or positive from the main character--who is usually a child. Kids are naturally the center of their own universes.
