15% but it feels like tax.

Once I went to a pretty high end salon for Keratin Special and I thought I tipped very well (at least 20%). The stylist says, "oh very generous of you." You think he was being sarcastic?

The standard I have always gone by is 20% plus a tip for assistants, if an assistant is actually applying the color I would break the tip more between the stylist and the assisant. I tip that plus my hair stylist cuts my children's hair at no charge so I tip significantly more for that. I have a sibling that is a colorist at a high end NYC salon and has worked at a salon in DC when she was younger. If you are a poor tipper they notice.

I pay $230 and tip $50

I am the person who tips a combined $35 on a $185 appointment. The stylist's share comes to just over 16%, which some people may feel is undertipping. (I also give her $150 at Christmas.) But I don't feel compelled to tip a well-compensated professional at the same rate as a waiter at Cactus Cantina, a taxi driver, or even the person who hands me my drip coffee at Starbucks. IMO, the primary purpose of tipping should be to bump up a low wage.

I tip $15 on $50 - stylist is a friendquaintance plus more to hair washer.

I can't believe all the people who tip less than 20%! Esp on the cheaper cuts.

If that's what you pay for a haircut she probably likes you just fine. But she probably thinks you're uncouth.

For an $85 haircut I tip the owner/stylist $15 and give the shampoo person $5.

A long time ago the rule was "Don't tip the owner" but I haven't had an owner discourage tipping in decades.

20% to the stylist (sometimes a little more because it's easier to round up), $5 to the person who shampoos my hair.

I'd be embarrassed to do anything less than 15%, especially if I was in a high-end salon.

I always tip at least 20%. I've been seeing the same person for years and I really like her.

This isn't something my mom ever educated me about. Please tell me: what % is proper?

I can't get over how many people spend 150 or more on their hair. I pay $35 for my cut and do my own color. I tip my stylist $8-10.
