She actually is a wonderful person. She has three other DILs who adore her. This particular brother is marrying pretty late in life (he is 45) and his bride to be is just 26. I think she is a little immature and strange to expect a man of this age to take her name. What can I say, I am just glad my brother is getting married. He has had many girlfriends and a few fiances, but never settled down. His career won't be hurt by the name change, but like other PPs have said he will look like a whimp to his guy friends. But he adores his fiance, and he wants kids. I just hope they can do what makes them happy.

Most guys will think the same exact thing. So cross off most of the male population, and a significant portion of the females too. No one will say this to your face, but they'll think it.

Why can't they each just keep their own names and give the kids her name?

Is your brother really going to take on a hyphenated name that doesn't include his own last name? I feel that's even weirder than just taking the wife's last name.

i know a couple that use both last names although I don't know if either legally changed their names. Their kids have the double last name. At work dad still uses just his last name and at work mom still uses just her last name but everything else they use both. They didn't hyphenate - just use both names and I wouldn't be surprised as the years go on if the kids drop one of the names

I knew a couple that did this. The husband was a train wreck and now they are divorced. Luckily for the wife he changed his name back in the divorce.

I'm not blaming the divorce on the name change. Just relating my second-hand experience.

Apparently if you were reading the post, the Mil didn't mention it to the son. We're all allowed to have opinions.

My husband was willing to hyphenate our names for both of us (he was the one who brought it up), but I changed my name because I didn't have any particular attachment to my maiden name, and because it was easier. We WERE committed to having a "family name" that was shared with parents and children. I didn't want to be Ms Smith calling the school about Junior Jones.

As for "killing his career", ha, shows what you know. In my field, it's a huge leg up. I know several men who have taken their wives' names (always in hyphenate, though). Equality between the sexes is actually seen as a selling point. I feel a little sorry for you, being stuck in the dark ages, professionally.

My husband was willing to take my name. He isn't close to his family. I would have liked him to, except I have a last name that sounds very girly and thought it would be more difficult for him, networking-wise, than me.

FWIW I believe that women should have equal rights...hell I make more than my DH and will always work. But there are sometimes when you need to let DH have his "balls" back and this classifies as one of them.

I need to be able to look at my DH and see a man...a strong man...not some wimp who took my name willingly.
