SAHM here and I'm totally guilty of allowing my dd to watch probably too much tv so I can take care of my newborn, make dinner, shower, eyc. I would find it inexcusable for a daycare to sit kids in front of a tv.

We've been at a larger more corporate daycare and at a smaller independent one and neither has had any TV on at all. Honestly, and I'm not an anti-TV person, TV or movies at daycare would be absolutely unacceptable to me and I would not send my child to one that played any tv or movies at all.

My son's preschool let's the kids who stay for aftercare watch a movie on Friday afternoons. Doesn't bother me at all.

At our full-day preschool, they will sometimes watch cartoons on a portable DVD player in the late afternoon on rainy days. They would normally be playing outside at that time.
It's not ideal, but I'm not losing any sleep over it. I do the pickup nearly every day and have only seen this happening 3-4 times in the last year.

I would definitely ask how long they kids spend watching TV. And, if it's every day?
I also agree about asking if they provide alternatives. I would pick DD up sometimes at her old daycare (where there was TV) and the kids were mostly 'forced' to watch TV. As in, if they got up to walk around, they'd be instructed to 'sit back down and watch tv'.
I have 3 kids [now older in college]. Based on moving we were at 5 different preschools. None turned on the TV except when they played video of little plays or shows the children had been in. 1 FCPS school played about 20 -30 minutes almost daily of disney style videos. That was kindergarten and they were not allowed to walk around or do anything else.
The teacher said they were resting and unwinding to go home.

Our daycare in Dupont had "movie day" once a month one of the kids (or their parents) gets to bring in a couple of the kid's favorite DVDs or a movie to share, starting in the 3s room. Stuff like "Cars," Dora or Leapfrog Phonics.

This isn't like home where I, the mom, might be making dinner and throwing laundry in and trying to feed the baby so I let my kid watch TV!
Since we don't even have a TV at home, I don't care if my 4yo DD watches a 20-minute "Dora" video 3-4 times in two years for special events such as "Pajama Day" or something like that. . . .compared to all the kids who have TV at home, she probably thinks it is the biggest treat she's ever imagined! The poor kid doesn't even know what commercials are. LOL. One time we were in a hotel that (of course) had a TV, and she thought a commercial was a new TV show (or "movie", actually, that's what she called it) coming on. . . .!

My kids go to a terrific daycare/preschool. On fridays they watch up to one movie. It's once a week and not every day. Doesn't bother me at all.
