The dog knew OJ as part of the family. Also, please understand that the average dog that bites is a fear biter. It is a dog with a high defense drive (most dogs operate out of prey drive) that will bite in a situation such as that. Most will bark and run.

Ok, crazy. OP is not a professional dog trainer. Your highly trained weapon is fine for you--clearly not the typical dog owner. And you said NO ONE comes on your property. You sound completely nuts.

I am the poster who has owned 3 Rottweilers. My current dog has achieved the AKC Utility Dog title, Tracking Dog title, and is working on his agility champion title. His pedigree is full of ScH dogs from Germany and the Netherlands; he is no slouch. He absolutely fulfills the criteria you outline above. That being said, he is not the appropriate dog for the average "pet owner" household.

Most people cannot/do not want to train to this level. And that is FINE, but they need t realize that and get the appropriate dog.

18:03 here. I am a different poster than 17:27, for the record...

I train and compete with my dogs in multiple dog sports. I have owned 3 Rottweilers, and I love the breed. My current 6- year old male has a stellar temperament, and he is amazing with children.

That being said, I would not recommend the breed to the casual owner. They are simply a LOT of dog, especially for a suburban environment.

There is a reason why Labs have been the most popular breed for ages. If you want something with a slightly more serious guarding instinct (but still less than a Malinois, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, etc.) , consider a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

An English Mastiff. No one is coming on my property.

Bernese Mountain Dog. Absolutely sweethearts with their family, especially kids, but you can literally feel your chest rattle when she barks. Not a guard dog, but an awesome watch dog. Will bark at anyone - stranger or not - who comes to the front door.

I credit my Berner with deterring a would-be burglar while I was home during maternity leave. Some guy came knocking at my door. I never answer the door when I'm home alone, but our 115 lbs. Berner made her presence known. He stopped knocking and made his way down our front steps. I continued to peek outside and watch the guy walk to our next door neighbor's house. When no one comes to the door after he knocks, he gets on his phone and in a minute or so, a car pulls up to the house. I see them disappear on the side of the house, so I call the police. Turns out they broke into a small basement window.

Without my dog, it would've been our house that got burglarized, or worse, a home invasion with me and my newborn. Whole thing freaked me out.
