No, it's not socially acceptable. That's one reason I enjoyed being a SAHM. Instead of wasting money on gas and purchase of required outfits, etc, I made my own bread, spent part of the week composting our garbage (didn't use a disposer), made my children's clothes using hand stitches whenever possible (wasteful to use electricity to power a sewing machine), participated in a clothing and shoe swap, collected rainwater for flushing our toilets, walked our children to school, and made my husband's ties. We've tried to live as green as possible. Do you have some more suggestions? TIA!
