agree with having seen some mil types who have monster commutes. Stupidly commuting far does not make you more macho.... just says lack of outside the box thinking.

Once met a guy who commuted up from south of richmond everyday. He woke up enough to put on his clothes and get himself to the bus and then went back to sleep for the ride. WHY??? Especially if you have kids-- dont want to see them i guess

I recently moved to Silver Spring. for two years I drove from Manassas to DC. VERY VERY painful. TRaffic was always bad. Once in the rain it took me 3 hours to get home.

I worked with a guy who took Amtrak from Dupont to Wilmington Delaware every day. He was a consultant, so the cost was charged to the client (after earning him lots 'o points on the credit card). He just slept or read the whole way.

Probably the longest commute from the Pentagon I've heard about recently is from DC to California.

I am very thankful, after years of metro hell, I commute 10 mins from Alexandria to Rosslyn

Me too. W. VA to downtown DC - on the train. At my old organization someone commuted in from W. VA to Bethesda.

Crazy. I also knew a guy who commuted from Richmond to Silver Spring every day. I-95 every day, sounds like pure hell. He didn't have kids though.

That's my question too. With $4.50 gas prices as well as it being a a horrible waste of time. Maybe they are stuck in their homes and can't move? I'd rather live in a small condo closer to work than a bigger house far away, but that's just me. Can't imagine losing 3+ hours a day just to commuting...

I'm the PP who mentioned the receptionist in Richmond. I don't know what her personal financial situation is like. However, it's a fed position so that might have something to do with her motivation to come all the way up here.

know someone who commutes into Union Station from somewhere in PA. Her husband works in Baltimore so he drops her off there every morning and picks her up before they slog home.

Most of our admins are from Fredericksburg.
