Lift is how much it lightens. Most OTC dyes don't have much--are better for going darker than going to a lighter shade.

I personally prefer to use semi-permanent when I color at home. It doesn't always cover quite as well, but it fades out in a much less noticeable way.

Not PP but some colors need to lift your natural shade in order to get your desired shade. You know how many brunettes end up copper when trying to go blonde? It gets brassy instead of lifting the brown and turning blonde.

I am not AA but used a drugstore brand of dye for AA hair for years because they had a really nice red shade. Creme of nature always worked great for me. I like that it has more lift. Also the shampoo smells wonderful.
