OP here. Thanks for all the great advice, PPs. I appreciate it. This is a big fear of mine.. My boss flips when I need to take a day. My grandfather had a major surgery and almost died and I took one day, not during a busy time of year. This was 5 months ago. She still mentions all the time I've taken off. I took fewer than 8 days (sick and vacation combined!) most of that sick or dr appointments, bc how dare I take a vacation.

I will not be able to go on multiple interviews at all. I know quitting makes most sense at this point, but I am still so afraid.

If your boss was to fire you, there is a signifcant chance that HR would let you resign rather than have you file for unemployment and might even provide a severance. That depends on the company.

Is your concern going in every day worried about being fired and would it help your perspective to accept that it going to happen unless you find a new job sooner, but cease worrying about the consequences because, in fact, you and your husband are in a good financial position. Another way to ask this is, is the problem interacting with her on a regular basis so she makes your daily life miserable, or is the fear of getting fired the problem?

This! from someone who currently has a job and has been looking for a while now. I guess it also depends on what field you are in. In my field, there is no movement/turnover it seems so there aren't any jobs to apply for, it sucks!.

Ugh you could be me a few years back. It is truly the WORST feeling, that pit in your stomach, not knowing what's in store .....definitely not worth the mental health hell.

I never in a million years thought I would ever do this, but a few years ago I had a horrible, horrible boss who was trying to get rid of me. Going to work every day was terrible-I would walk in and have that terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach, wondering what I was in for that day. My mental health was more important to me than anything else, so I quit without another job lined up. I got a job a week later (of course, I had been looking for a while). Next boss loved me, confirming that my previous boss was nutso.
