I think they were talking about early decision. HYP haven't sent out regular acceptances yet. Based on the National Merit Scholarship semifinalist list, this Sidwell graduating class might be less strong than the norm (while GDS is very strong, for example). Generally at all these schools it varies some from year to year which school does the "best" any given year, within a margin of error. You can make broad statements -- Sidwell/NCS/STA/GDS are stronger than Bullis or Stone Ridge for example -- but the top grouping is close enough that it's not worth worrying about if STA does better than NCS one year, or GDS does better than Sidwell one year, or any variety of the above.

Since you'll never know how many seniors actually applied to HYP or how many were admitted, this is not a good question to ask. The ONLY info you'll find is how many students actually *enroll* in HYP.

Find a school where your DC will thrive and be happy, not where your ego will be satisfied.

Holton mom #2, is it really true that legacy kids get into Princeton and Harvard with 35%? That seems high.

My kids a double Princeton (as many are). What would be his chances with decent grades and decent SATs in about 10 years, would you say?

The kids with the highest SAT scores and GPA. Changes every year. The school and college admisssions staff can't control it. Just because you pay a lot of money for a school or went there yourself don't think your child will get in with average grades and test scores or by taking the easy classes. Even if you are friends with the Bush or Obama family it is about the work your child does those last 4 years.

For Harvard and Princeton, for eg., legacy admits have about a 35% chanced of acceptance whereas the "non-hooked" applicant only has between a 7-8% chance of admittance. The numbers of admits mean nothing w/o further facts/data.

Agree that the data for "unhooked" applicants is not available. However, we can still agree that the poster who thought Holton had the most Ivy admits in absolute terms ("Holton Mom 1A") was way off.

Guess what guys? I went to a public school and got into not just Harvard, but Harvard, Brown, and Cornell - all Ivies!!

Let your children pick where they want to go to college. People who went to non Ivies still end up in amazing, successful careers. People who go to Ivies still end up in lame dead end careers and sometimes even on the streets.

What's most important is a child's ambition not the fact that you sent them to a private school that you think will get them into Harvard.

I have plenty of college friends who aren't doing anything that I'd consider successful or prestigious. I have one friend who just ran out of trust fund money and is now begging his parents for help, and guess what? They're not giving it to him. I think they're realizing their mistake in trying to "set him up" for the rest of his life. We personally are tired of paying more than our fair share for dinners out when this guy's out with us. Moocher.
