I'd forgotten about when we lived on Foxhall this preteen neighbour boy (white but with a fro, just so you can picture it) used to periodically climb out on the roof when his parents made him mad (abusing him? Not buying him something? Making him do his homework? Who knows).

One night we were having a dinner party and he started it up, began to panic and couldn't climb down (or wouldn't) so the fire brigade came. My husband was giving directions to coworkers on the phone like that old Adam Sandler stand-up act "Turn left at the retAAAAHHded kid on the roof".

So, yeah, watch out for THAT.

You should find out about local zoning ordinances (local municipality - not county level) and how difficult it is to get something "reasonable" done. I realize everyone's definition of reasonable varies - but use your definition and find out. I've seen many families exasperated in our neighborhood about not being able to make their lot safe and remove dangerous trees or spending a fortune in permits/surveys to do a minor improvement to their doorstep.

Check the schools. You can have a house in a great walkable neighborhood that borders another neighborhood with tons of apartments with low-income people, and the schools will be filled with kids from the apartments and your kids are the minority from the SFHs.

Crazy neighbors. Nuff said.

make sure it is a walkable community - safe streets or sidewalks mean that people will be out and about - safer and more friendly. Also buy in an area that is close to stores, restaurants, etc so you are not wasting a lot of time in your car.

Making sure the school bus stop is not too far if you have young children.

I wish we have a nice sidewalk to our library/community center, otherwise, it is a nice place. We LOVE living in a cul de sac and our neighbors are generally great.

I wish we had sidewalks.

Before you fall for a house, drive a few blocks in each direction to make sure the houses are consistently maintained.

We live in the city. In addition to the construction noise/hassle, every vacant lot on our block they filled with condos means parking sucks that much more.
